ATIKOKAN (ONTARIO), September 17, 2020 – Employees of Resolute Forest Products’ Atikokan sawmill proudly presented a $10,000 cheque to Community Living Atikokan for the Aspen Court Senior Living fundraising campaign at a ceremony held at the facility earlier today. Sawmill employees earned the prize money through Resolute’s Board of Directors Safety Award program for achieving 500,000 consecutive hours of work without a recordable injury.
“Today, we are here to recognize the significant health and safety milestones our sawmill employees have achieved together,” said Luc Thériault, senior vice president, Wood products. “We always put the safety of our people first and maintain world-class standards to continuously measure and improve our safety efforts. Given the stress and concern due to COVID-19, we are especially proud of our employees’ achievement, and for supporting an important cause.”
Jim Turner, executive director of Community Living Atikokan, which is leading the Aspen Court Senior Living project, accepted the award on behalf of the organization, adding: “Community Living Atikokan appreciates the generous contribution from Resolute’s Atikokan sawmill employees for the Aspen Court Senior Living project. The new 38-suite complex will offer seniors a safe, affordable and supportive place to live close to home in Atikokan. This donation will provide the equipment for Aspen Court’s community room, which will be named after Resolute highlighting the company’s support.”
Community Living Atikokan is a community-based organization dedicated to promoting the acceptance and value of all persons. The non-profit entity is leading a fundraising campaign to raise $200,000 for the Aspen Court Senior Living project, a planned $14 million community hub for seniors that will provide residents essential housing and shared spaces for recreation, health, education and social programming. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2020 with completion in 2021.
Resolute is committed to supporting the needs and interests of the communities where it operates. Since 2010, through the Board of Directors Safety Award Program, Resolute has donated over $300,000 to Northwestern Ontario community programs and organizations chosen by the employees of the company’s pulp and paper mill, sawmills, wood pellet plant and woodlands operations in the region. Company-wide, donations to worthy causes chosen by employees that have reached significant safety milestones total over $2.5 million.
